“Lucy Brewer would never have guessed that her best friend, Duffy McCready (of McCready’s Bait Shop & Funeral Home) has been in love with her since they were kids. Fear of rejection and his own romantic complications prevented Duffy from confessing his true feelings in high school, so he stood by and watched her wed Wayne Bowman right after high school. Wayne had always been a cheapskate, so it comes as no surprise when he suffers a fatal accident while fixing his own truck.

Even as her family and friends invade Lucy’s life and insist that the new widow is too fragile to do much beyond weeping, Lucy is ashamed to admit that life without Wayne is easier, less complicated. After all, no one knew what a relentless, soul-grinding trudge marriage to Wayne had been. Only Duffy can tell she’s hiding something.

In need of a fresh start, Lucy asks Duffy to put his cabinet-building skills to use, transforming the town’s meat shop into a bake shop. As the bakery takes shape, Lucy and Duffy discover the spark that pulled them together so many years ago. Could this finally be the second chance he’s always hoped for?” Amazon

My Review:

This is book six in the Southern Eclectic series, and this will be the third one that I’ve read. The other two, Sweet Tea & Sympathy (click to read review) and Ain’t She a Peach (click to read review) are full length, as is this one. The other three in the series are novellas. I really think this is a unique way to publish books in a series. People don’t have to wait as long in between books. And if there’s a character that you only have a little bit to write about, then put that character into one of the novellas. Whomever thought of this, either Molly Harper or someone on her book production team, is a genius.

Since I’ve read two other books in the series, it should come as no surprise that I enjoyed this one too. I love books that take place in Georgia (I will travel there one day!), have lots of wacky characters, and have different sub-genres in romance. Gimme Some Sugar is a second chance romance. Lucy and Duffy knew each other in high school and were close to becoming more than just friends, but life got in the way. Lucky for them, years later, life got in the way again.

Although I didn’t laugh as much as I did with Sweet Tea & Sympathy, this one still had amusing moments. And her character development, which was good to begin with, just keeps getting better. That is one of the best way to get readers to keep coming back to a series, and Harper is a master at this type of writing. She gives you characters that you are rooting for, as well as ones that are so nasty, you want to come back again to see just how insane they can get. And Harper definitely delivered the crazy nasty with Duffy’s ex-wife in this book.

You don’t need to read these books in order, since Harper gives you enough backstory to understand what is going on. But as with any series, I do try to read them in order, since there are still little things that you pick up. Someday I would like to go back and read some of the novellas, but I know I will, for sure, be reading the next full length one.
