Kim’s Review

I was at Wizard World ComicCon in Madison and sat in on a panel with George Michail and three other self published authors. The panel was good, but George Michail’s talk and personality really stood out. After the panel I went back to the sales floor and stopped by his both to pick up Volume One of Cover of Darkness, which has the first three graphic novels in one and the single issue of number four. Only the four issues are out so far, and I’m excitedly waiting for more.

I’ve always enjoyed the classic horror monsters, so when I learned that they were in Cover of Darkness, along with shapeshifters and other monsters, I was even more intrigued. The story revolves around a family that gets torn apart and how they try to find each other again. It also includes various timelines with the monsters coming together. An interesting idea, and I’m looking forward to how the story continues.

There were two things that stood out to me that I think could be improved upon a bit. The lettering in some of the panels were really close to the split in the middle of the book, making some of it a little hard to read. But that could just be the way the graphic novel was set up for printing. And a few of the drawn panels were so dark I couldn’t tell what was going on in the picture. I realize it’s a dark story that takes place at night and in dark passages, but with the artwork done so well by M.J. Hiblen, I wanted to see all of it!
